REGINA JOSE’ GALINDO incontra Margarethe Drexel, Laure Keyrouz, Jure Markota e Paola Pisani

Regina José Galindo, impegnata in questi giorni in Friuli Venezia Giulia come artista in residenza RAVE East Village Artist Residency 2014 , sarà presente a Trieste lunedì 2 giugno.
L’incontro triestino, organizzato per Trieste Contemporanea, è parte del denso programma curato da RAVE per la residenza a Trivignano dell’artista guatemalteca che, dopo Adrian Paci e Ivan Moudov, è la terza rappresentante della scena artistica internazionale ad essere invitata in residenza RAVE.
Regina José Galindo, parlerà del suo impegno artistico e commenterà la sua performance Oveja Negra (la pecora nera), progetto artistico inedito ideato per RAVE sabato 31 maggio a Torreano.
Durante la giornata del 2 giugno, presso il cascinale dove si svolge l’edizione RAVE 2014 a Torreano di Cividale, quattro giovani artisti di Austria, Slovenia, Veneto e Friuli Venezia Giulia, rispettivamente Margarethe Drexel, Jure Markota, Laure Keyrouz e Paola Pisani, selezionati da Daniele Capra e Giuliana Carbi avranno al possibilità di partecipare a un breve workshop che si svolgerà nella stessa giornata di lunedì e che avrà come sua fase conclusiva l’incontro di Trieste. I giovani artisti potranno approfondire con una “collega” come Regina José Galindo, Leone d’Oro alla 51.ma Biennale di Venezia e attualmente in mostra con la sua personale ‘Estoy Viva’ al PAC, Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea di Milano, le motivazioni e le tematiche della loro produzione artistica.
L’incontro allo Studio Tommaseo vuole essere anche l’occasione per aprire il dialogo a tutti gli artisti del nostro territorio e a quanti vorranno partecipare all’incontro.

RAVE East Village Artist Residency è realizzato dall’associazione di promozione sociale East Village, con il supporto della Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, in collaborazione con Trieste Contemporanea, L’Officina e il main partner Vulcano unità di produzione contemporanea.

RAVE 2014: Artist in residence Regina José Galindo

This year sees a remarkable resident artist at the 2014 RAVE- East Village Artist Residency, the annual residency program in the countryside of Friuli, which hosts a leading international artist each summer, inviting them to undertake their research in this specific context.
RAVE is a project created by Tiziana and Isabella Pers and Giovanni Marta, which brings together contemporary art with the need to look towards a bio centric perspective and promote the research and diffusion of contemporary art through anti-speciesist thinking.
This year the spirit of RAVE will be interpreted by the outstanding Guatemalan artist Regina José Galindo, winner of the Golden Lion at the 51st Venice Biennale, and currently holding a major solo exhibition ‘Estoy Viva’ at the PAC, Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan, open until 8th of June.

During her period in Friuli the artist will be staying at our farmhouse, living alongside animals which have been saved from the abattoir, taken away from consumerist mechanisms and welcomed and cared for in a more natural environment.
Shortly after her arrival, Regina José Galindo will meet the public at a conference at Casa Cavazzini, Museo d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea in Udine, on Thursday 29th May at 6pm. This has been made possible thanks to the Regione Autonoma Friuli Venezia Giulia, with the support of the Comune di Udine and Civici Musei di Udine, in collaboration with Trieste Contemporanea, L’Officina, Gallinae in Fabula and OIPA Organizzazione Internazionale Protezione Animali and the Main partner Vulcano Contemporary Production Unit.
The conference will be a conversation between the artist Tiziana Pers and Regina José Galindo, who will discuss how she came to create actions with an intense social and political commitment, and talk about her work this year at RAVE.

During her time in Friuli, Regina has been invited to develop and create a new project which interacts with the local environment and addresses the themes of the residency. Regina’s research concentrates on the use of her own body to denounce violence against women, and more generally to address the social, political and cultural difficulties of contemporary society. Her work follows the same vein of research opened by Ana Mendieta and Marina Abramovič in the 1970’s.
The Guatemalan artist, one of the most magmatic representatives of Latin-American art, concludes her time at the Friulano residency with the performance La oveja negra (the Black Sheep), which will be held on Saturday 31st May in Torreano in the splendid hills around Cividale. Regina defines her performances as “acts of of psycho-magic”, underlining the emotional charge and the suffering they carry within them. The artist uses a gestural aggression towards her own physical and psychological limits and thus transforms her own body into a permanent theatre of conflict, exemplifying the dramatic events experienced by the population of Guatemala and human society in general. At RAVE, for the first time in her artistic career, Regina will address the question of otherness beyond the boundaries of species, using her own body as a canvas to reconstruct the suffering and discrimination not just of the human other, but also of the animal other. Starting from a personal and biographical experience, together with the experiences and tragedies of other artist who have come before her, she has created an action based on the concept of the “Black Sheep”, both within a human intra-species system and with a higher viewpoint of an inter-species perspective. In the words of Pier Paolo Pasolini: “I too would like it if it were easy to isolate the black sheep. I too see the black sheep. I see quite a lot of them. I see all of them. That’s the problem …”

Regina Josè Galindo won the Golden Lion at the 51st Venice Biennale in 2005 as best artist under the age of 35 for “creating a courageous action against power”. She has held exhibitions in numerous museums in Europe, America and Latin America. These include: ad ARTIUM – Centro Artium Vitoria Gasteiz (2012); Migros Museum, Zurich (2010); Museo Madre, Naples (2010); Haus der Kulturen der Welt, Berlin (2010); Kunsthalle, Vienna (2010); MAM – Miami Art Museum, Miami (2009); MoMA-PS1 New York (2008). She participated at the 49th, 51st, 53rd and 54th Venice Biennials; 10th Bienal de la Habana, Cuba; the Sidney Biennial; 29th Ljubljana Biennial and the Sharijah Biennial. Her solo exhibition ‘ESTOY VIVA’ can currently be seen at PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea, in Milan, where it is open until the 8th of June.
