APAP Announces Programming Highlights for 62nd Annual Global Performing Arts Gathering

Jane Chu, PBS Arts Advisor and Former NEA Chair Will Kick-Off APAP;NYC 2019 at the Opening Plenary Session; 2018 MacArthur “Genius” Fellows Vijay Gupta and Okwui Okpokwasili Also to Present

The Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) today announced important programming highlights for APAP|NYC 2019, the world’s leading global performing arts gathering, marketplace and membership conference, taking place from January 4-8. Leading with a diverse group of voices from across the globe and throughout the performing arts industry, APAP;NYC 2019 will deliver a dynamic event designed to provoke, prepare and propel artists and arts professionals in these unpredictable times.
On January 3rdand 4th, APAP;NYC 2019will hold its pre-conference, with many professional development sessions and networking forums, most of which are free and open to the public. The pre-conference will also include Wavelengths, the largest gathering of world music professionals in North America, produced by globalFESTand PR firm rock paper scissors.
In its 62ndyear, this annual industry gathering will host more than 3,600 performing arts professionals as they experience 1,000 performance showcases, a robust 370-booth EXPO Hall and thought-provoking plenary sessions. Programming highlights for this year’s conference focuses on how the performing arts presenting industry drives change together. “The Power of WE” at APAP; NYC 2019 affirms the collective impact of the industry and the performing arts as a positive agent in our communities, our nation and the world.
“APAP; NYC 2019 will be an important moment for our leaders and those aspiring to lead to dive into areas that will affect the outcome of the health of our industry in these turbulent times. This moment will also serve as a call to action for our industry to identify how we can positively impact the outcomes of our contributions to our communities and the field,” said Mario Garcia Durham, President and CEO of APAP.

Kicking off the conference at the opening plenary session on Friday, January 4th will be Jane Chu, PBS Arts Advisor and Former Chairperson of the National Endowment for the Arts. In a presentation on “The Power of Art”, she will deliver a multi-dimensional perspective on our creative industry, from her unique vantage point as a former arts administrator and presenter, leader and artist.
APAP; NYC 2019 will move the performing arts industry forward with bold conversations around current issues affecting our workforce, communities and APAP’s membership. These conversations will take place across more than 50 professional development sessions, organized by 10 subject-matter tracks.

APAP|NYC’s daily plenary sessions, as well as the annual awards luncheon, will also be streamed on Facebook Live.

Jane Chu, PBS Arts Advisor and Former Chairperson of the National Endowment of the Arts. In her current role at PBS, she advises on opportunities for public media to broaden its access and representation in its presentation of the arts to audiences nationwide. During her four years at the NEA, Chu served as the nation’s foremost ambassador forthe arts, overseeing competitive grants that helped the arts flourish despite years of diminished state and local funding.
Previously, she spent eight years leading the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts in Kansas City, Missouri, from its initial planning stages to overseeing construction of the $413-million center designed by renowned architect Moshe Safdie in 2011. Earlier in her career, she held executive roles in development and philanthropy at Union Station Kansas City, the Greater Kansas City Community Foundation and the Kauffman Fund.
